History of Christmas

Christmas is the festival of lights, laughter and presents. For most of the western world, Christmas is celebrated on the first Sunday of December. The true meaning of Christmas is about Jesus Christ returning from the dead and bringing glory to the Father through His coming in the flesh to save humanity. When we celebrate Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and the gift of His atoning work in defeating the powers of darkness, sin and evil.

The true meaning of Christmas differs from what we celebrate in our calendars. While many Christians around the world see Christmas as a time for giving gifts and receiving presents, this is not the true meaning of Christmas. The true meaning of Christmas is celebrated in the Holy Church on the first Sunday of December every year. The celebration in the Holy Church symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, and the coming of the Kingdom of God with His coming as the Lord.

The fourth century before Christ came into the world, the ancient church celebrates the Winter Solstice. This period had two different seasons, the last day of winter on which the sun sets in the east and the first day of spring on which the sun rises in the west. The early Christians considered the sun to be another god, and they honored the sun on different occasions such as the Winter Solstice, the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, and Passover. The Christmas celebration is rooted in these early Christian celebrations.

Christianity celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God incarnate. On the twenty-first day of December, after the winter solstice, Christmas is recognized by the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian sects as the birth of Christ. The celebration of Christmas has various meanings attached to it and there are many different religions which celebrate it in their own way. There are Christians who regard it to be the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, yet others view it as a festival to honor the birth of Jesus Christ. The majority of people however, view it as a festival to celebrate God's gift to humanity of a savior like Christ.

Christianity considers the birth of Jesus Christ to be the most important religious event which happened in the earth and consequently, the twenty-first day of Christmas is viewed as the anniversary of this event by most of the Christians. The birth of Jesus Christ is also regarded as the beginning of the Christian era when Christianity spread all over the world. Many customs and traditions have evolved with the changing time and are associated with the Festivity of Christmas. Some of these traditions are the decorating of Christmas trees and the celebration of feasting.

On the twelfth day of January, Christmas is celebrated as Christmas day in most of the parts of the world. Christmas is celebrated in many countries other than United States of America where it is seen as the celebration of Saint Nick. Some other countries celebrate Christmas on the 25th March, which is also known as the Winter Festival.
